When: East Cocalico Board of Supervisors meeting, Feb. 6.
What happened: The township voted to approve hiking rates at the Reamstown Pool for this season. Most of the hikes will be about $5 per pass, Melody Stout, assistant township manager, said.
Cost: It cost $149,060 to operate the pool last year, Stout said after the meeting, and the township projects the cost this year will be $177,205.
Details: Chair Lorenzo Bonura said Reamstown’s rates will probably be matched by the Denver Community Pool since the two municipalities have a pass-share program allowing patrons to visit either pool. That was what Denver Borough Manager Mike Hession was recommending to borough council, Bonura said.
By the numbers: The cost for the shared pool pass for a family for the summer will be $325. For the Reamstown Pool only, the family cost will be $250. The daily rates are $7.50 for adults, $5 for students, $4 for senior citizens and $2 for pre-K children.
Financial loss: The pool is not a moneymaker for the township.
Quotable: “We’re losing over $80,000 a year on the pool, but we have to have some kind of rec thing for the kids and the residents,” Bonura said. “This little increase along with all the pool passes and stuff we sold last year — we should see roughly around $2,800 more.”
Lifeguard hikes: Also, the Ephrata Recreation Center that manages the Reamstown Pool and supplies lifeguards has upped its rate. The township budgeted $69,300 to pay the rec center this year, compared to $62,240 last year, Stout said after the meeting.
Trash talk: The board voted to approve a list of trash haulers permitted to operate in the township.
Background: Residents can select their own trash hauler, but it must be one of the approved haulers. The approved haulers for this year are: B&L Carson Disposal LLC, Good’s Disposal Service, Purple Heart Disposal, Republic Services, Waste Industries and Waste Management & Recycling Services.
More: A couple of past haulers still have not yet sought approval, Bonura said.
Quotable: “They (the haulers who did not seek approval) will be notified that they’re not allowed to collect trash or recyclables anymore here in the township,” Bonura said.
Next meeting: The board will meet again at 7 p.m. Feb. 20 at the township building.
