Lancaster Township police have charged a licensed nurse at Abbeyville Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center with stealing nonnarcotic medication belonging to a 77-year-old patient.

Tom Nyakeriga, 50, of Lancaster, is charged with neglect of a care-dependent person and theft by unlawful taking, both misdemeanors.

Police say between June 2024 and January 2025, Nyakeriga stole nonnarcotic medications, including unidentified pills from a patient. Nyakeriga concealed the theft by blacking out the patient's name on the prescription labels and destroying product information, according to charging documents.

Police say the alleged crime was discovered after a witness discovered the medication in Nyakeriga’s home and reported the theft to the Lancaster County Office of Aging. The investigation was turned over to Lancaster Township police, and Nyakeriga was charged on Friday.

A representative with Abbeyville Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, at 100 Abbeyville Road, confirmed that Nyakeriga is no longer employed by the company.
