Former Notre Dame defensive coordinator Al Golden has been named the Broyles Award winner as the nation’s top assistant coach. Golden helped Notre Dame reach the national championship game last month before he was hired as the Cincinnati Bengals’ defensive coordinator. The Fighting Irish ranked second in the Football Bowl Subdivision in scoring defense and ninth in total defense. The other four finalists were Arizona State offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo, Indiana defensive coordinator Bryant Haines, Tennessee defensive coordinator Tim Banks and Texas defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski.

A person familiar with the situation says that Ohio State is hiring former Detroit Lions coach Matt Patricia as defensive coordinator. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the agreement had not been announced. Coming off the national championship, Ohio State coach Ryan Day agreed in principle last year to a seven-year contract valued at $12.5 million per year. Day hired Patricia to fill the void left by defensive coordinator Jim Knowles leaving for the same job at Penn State. The 50-year-old Patricia was let go by the Philadelphia Eagles a year ago.

Henri Crockett played in the Orange Bowl. He now will oversee the game. Crockett was announced Friday as the new president and chair of the Orange Bowl Committee, making him the first person to have played in the game and serve in those roles. It is a one-year term for Crockett. The Orange Bowl will next be played Jan. 1, 2026, as a quarterfinal game in the College Football Playoff, and the Orange Bowl Committee will help host the next CFP national championship game on Jan. 19, 2026.
NFL coach Sean Payton says he can't think of a major American sporting venue that has aged as well as the nearly 50-year-old Superdome. The unmistakable figure in the New Orleans skyline is hosting its eighth Super Bowl on Sunday. Many major professional stadiums from the Superdome's era are no longer standing. Neither are many built years after it. But the Superdome's expansive and sturdy design has allowed its interior to be updated multiple times over the years. That's kept it viable as the home of the NFL's New Orleans Saints and in the Super Bowl rotation. The Superdome also has hosted six NCAA men’s Final Fours and 13 college football games that decided that sport's national champion.
