A flipped tanker carrying road oil shut down a section of Route 501 in Lancaster County Friday afternoon.

The tanker flipped just after 11 a.m. in Elizabeth Township near the Pennsylvania Turnpike overpass, tearing down phone and power lines at Coleman Memorial Chapel.

There was a small leak in the tanker’s load of road oil that arriving emergency crews worked to contain. First responders said the driver exited the vehicle and was making calls at the scene.

Route 501 is closed for a little over a mile north of Route 322. Crews were still on scene clearing the spill as of 12:30 p.m., according to a dispatcher with Lancaster County Wide Communications. According to WGAL, the road was reopened by 3:30 p.m.

This is the second tanker that flipped in the county Friday, after a 3,000-gallon propane tanker flipped in East Earl Township. It retained its load, but spilled diesel fuel from the truck, which was cleaned up before noon.
