Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Plaxico Burress sold his Super Bowl XLII ring at auction for a record amount. At Heritage Auction, the ring sold for $280,600, which is the highest ever paid for a player’s ring, edging out Lawrence Taylor’s Super Bowl XXV ring, which sold for $230,000.

In that game, Burress caught the game-winning touchdown from Eli Manning to slay the New England Patriots, preventing a perfect season for New England. Considering is one of the heroes of that win, it is no surprise to see the ring garner so much attention and sell for a record number.

Before heading to the Giants, Burress became a breakout star with the Steelers. They selected him in the first round of the 2000 NFL Draft, but he left Pittsburgh following the expiration of his rookie contract.

Burress would return for one last year with the Steelers before calling it a career. He was embroiled in controversy throughout his career, including 20 months in jail after being convicted of attempted weapon possession.
