SAFE BOATING COURSE

• Conewago Rod and Gun Club: The group will host the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission's Safe Boating course on May 4 at the clubhouse, located at 1483 Turnpike Road, Elizabethtown. This free eight-hour course starts at 8 a.m. People who successfully complete a Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission approved boating course can be issued a Boating Safety Education Certificate good for a lifetime. This certificate is required to operate a personal watercraft, and for persons born on or after Jan. 1, 1982, to operate boats powered by motors greater than 25 horsepower. Students who successfully complete this course may apply for a Boating Safety Education Certificate issued by the Commission. To receive the certification, the student must send a check or money order for $10 to the Commission. Preregistration is required. SUNDAY, FEB. 23

• Columbia Fish and Game: The club, at 4339 Fairview Road, Columbia, will hold a public trap shoot each Sunday from 10 a.m.-noon. Additionally, the club will host its Black Powder Open House from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $1. There will be: Black powder demonstrations, displays and vendors; reenactment demonstrations; door prizes; and food. Donations at the event are appreciated. There will also be a special Black Powder Shoot with prizes for first, second and third place. Cost to participate is $1 per target, shooting for best score, submitting your best score. • Lancaster County Bird Club: John Lahr will lead a late-afternoon woodcock and waterfowl field trip to Middle Creek WMA.  The main objective of this trip will be to hear and/or view the courtship display of the American Woodcock. The group will visit an area where there is an opportunity to hear and view this unique event. Some of the time before dusk will be spent scanning the lake and surrounding habitat for waterfowl and other birds that might be in the area.
