Smucker protest

More than 60 protesters gathered outside U.S. Rep. Lloyd Smucker’s Lancaster County district office on Friday afternoon to urge the Republican congressman to speak out against President Donald Trump’s federal funding freeze and billionaire Elon Musk’s efforts to remake the federal government.

Samantha McNally and Dan Reynolds, of Manheim Township, organized the event through Indivisible MT — a local subgroup of the national liberal organization Indivisible, which has organized thousands of phone calls to lawmakers’ offices.

“Smucker has an important oversight role and (he) should be doing more to stand up for us,” McNally told the crowd through a bullhorn, referencing Smucker’s role on the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee. “And frankly, if he doesn't, he may be ceding the remaining power of the people's House to an unchecked executive.”

Three members of Smucker’s staff, including Communications Director Eric Reath, stood near the protesters and handed out notecards for constituents to write messages for Smucker.

Since Smucker’s office is located in a business park that’s privately owned by United Disability Services and the Erin Court Condo Association, the protesters gathered on a public road about 50 yards from the building’s entrance. (The property owners contacted McNally beforehand to note where it would be legal for the protesters to gather.)

Two United Disability Services employees stood outside the offices and redirected cars away from parking in the plaza’s lot.

An East Hempfield Township police officer arrived about 10 minutes into the start of the protest to notify attendees that they were not permitted to park in a nearby private lot.
